wow - have to say I was very interested in reading when the chapter starts out as "meaningless! meaningless!"
I had to pull out my "bare bones" Bible book to help me understand the purpose of this section. First I learned that Ecclesiastes means "an official speaker in an assembly". Ah, this book was written by King Solomon near the end of his life after he strayed away from God - starting to make more sense now. "Solomon is hoping to spare his readers the bitterness of learning through personal experience that carrying out life's pursuits apart from God is empty, hollow, fruitless, and meaningless". Now I get the point! And how very true are those words!!!
