So I really slogged through todays reading. What amazes me, is picturiing how bloody the temple actually was. Those poor priests were constantly surrounded by it. And giving back then seemed so much more personal or sacrificial. I mean all we do is take money out, or write a check. We can even do it on line now. These people had to go out to their barn, pick a perfect goat (I understand many sacrifices were chosen from the time they were born and raised as an offering), and then physically kill it. I wonder how we might be different if we still did it that way.
All I can say is that I'm so happy that God sent His only Son as our sacrifice! I found it interesting in my Bible side notes it said that sin separated the Israelites from God and he cannot have communion with sin! Ouch!!! What a great reminder that we need to confess our sins and ask for forgiveness!!! The sacrifices were a way to atone for the sin and to have a relationship with God. So as a permanent solution to our sin problem, Christ came to earth and sacrificed his life. It's important to remember that God wants to be a part of our life so much that he allowed the sacrifice of his only to Son to have a relationship with us! How loved we truly are!
I totally resonate with what you said, Staci! What if every time I was impatient with my kids or overdosed on sugar I had to go kill a pet? I guess all the bloody mess and horrid smells that must have been present were good reminders of how repulsive sin really is.
so I wondered how often people had to do the offerings for their sins? Was it for each and every sin they did? I suppose if you had to go to all the work of finding perfect animals that maybe it would discourage people from sinning so often... Did everyone provide offerings/sacrifices for their sins? I was just thinking that alot of animals and grains must have been used to cleansed everyone from all their sins...
I was wondering some of the same things you did, Jen, about the logistics of the offerings. It does seem like their whole lives could have revolved around sacrificing. Any ideas on how the tabernacle could service so many people--weren't there nearly a million Isrealites?
This reading reminds us that we can't just play ignorant and do nothing about it. I was reading a Bible commentary and it was talking about how we are "supposed to do all in our power to make ammends for our shortcomings." We can't close our eyes to the light and knowledge, hoping we won't be responsible. It says,"But in the judgment we shall all have to give an account, not only for what we know, but for what we might have known had we put forth the effort to learn." Lev 5:17 states, "Now if a person sins and does any of the things which the Lord has commanded not to be done, though he was unaware, still he is guilty and shall bear his punishment." I am so glad that we are putting forth effort to better ourselves, and know the Lord and how he wants us to live our lives.
